We are heartbroken to hear the devastating news that our Golden View 5th grade student who was involved in the serious accident passed away today. I cannot believe I was just at her 5th grade promotion at Golden View. She was so excited to leave her very own painted rock in the Golden View farm as she promoted to middle school. A counselor intern working this summer will provide Golden View families with activities to help students process their grief while at home during the summer. My thoughts and prayers are with the family. If you can and would like to support the family, here is the gofund page that was shared and set up for the family.

Featuring OVSD's implementation of WellSpaces
This morning, we were delighted to welcome J.J. Zavalla with abc7 to highlight Marine View’s WellSpace affectionately named “The Fish Bowl". In cooperation with the Orange County Department of Education (OCDE), OVSD is implementing WellSpaces in all four of our middle schools. The specially designed rooms will provide students an opportunity to un-plug, relax and recenter while affording them a quiet place to process emotions and practice mindfulness and relaxation activities under the supervision of school staff. I'm excited and can't wait to visit all the WellSpaces in the coming weeks at Spring View, Mesa View and Vista View.
Thank you to Marine View Principal Schaible, Barb Davis and the Marine View ASB students who shared how this space will benefit them and their peers. The future is bright and full of optimism as our children learn to find their voice and learn to self advocate for their mental well-being.

OVSD’s New Superintendent
****Official OVSD Press Release****
OVSD’s New Superintendent
Tonight, the Board of Trustees took formal action to appoint Dr. Michael Conroy as the Ocean View School District’s new Superintendent. Please join the Board of Trustees in welcoming Dr. Conroy back to the District, with the knowledge that he is committed to continuing the excellent work that we have accomplished together during the past seven years.
As you may know, Dr. Conroy served as Deputy Superintendent of the District from 2015 to 2021. We have asked Dr. Conroy to bring his own perspective to the superintendency, while continuing many of the initiatives he helped develop, including our unique Partnership with Administration and Labor.
In addition to his expertise in business and operations, Dr. Conroy brings significant experience in leadership and teaching. He was a high school math and business teacher for ten years before serving as a high school principal, director of business services, assistant superintendent, and deputy superintendent.
Vice President Patricia Singer and I led the Board in the superintendent search process with assistance from Dr. Joseph M. Farley, a superintendent search consultant and former Orange County superintendent. Dr. Conroy was selected as Superintendent after a lengthy interview with all Trustees.
Dr. Farley convened a focus group of District parents, teachers, administrators, and classified staff to determine what stakeholders desire in a new superintendent, and the issues the new superintendent will encounter. The findings indicated an interest in someone who would continue the outstanding leadership set forth by Dr. Hansen for the past seven years, while preparing the District for upcoming challenges.
Dr. Conroy signed a three-year contract and will begin his new position in July.
Please join us in congratulating and welcoming Dr. Conroy back to our District!

Masks optional for OVSD students and staff starting, Monday March 14
While masking will now be optional at our Ocean View schools, the district welcomes and encourages staff and students to continue mask wearing if that is your preference. Regardless, what your family's stance/choice on mask wearing is please let us encourage each other and our students to kind, respectful and mindful of each other. Let us come together as a community and embrace our differences with compassion and understanding.

Endangered National Treasure Historic Wintersburg on fire.
This morning we were advised of a fire at the Wintersburg site and I immediately went to the site. It devastates me to report the loss of one of the main structures, the 112-year old manse (parsonage) of this rare, national recognized significant historic place. The structure was so significantly burned that the fire department had to partially collapse the structure to air the smoke and avoid a restart of a fire.
We are calling for a full and complete arson investigation. This follows years of neglect by Republic Services. This loss is devastating for our community.

Marine View Middle School is a Modernized Marvel!
The newly modernized Marine View Middle School is a site to behold! Thanks to funds
from Measure R, a general obligation bond the community passed in 2016, Marine View
has been totally transformed.
The school was originally built in 1967 and serves students in 6th, 7th, and 8th grade.
The year-long modernization project called for a totally re-envisioned school which
required a complete overhaul to the campus, starting with the demolition of everything
inside each building’s shell. In a nod to the school’s nautical name and location in the
heart of Huntington Beach, the front exterior of the school and hallways are adorned
with beautiful murals of iconic images from throughout Surf City. As students walk
through the school, they see murals of downtown Huntington Beach, the pier, surfers
riding waves, the harbor, and the wetlands, to name a few.
The project scope included building a new science lab, art lab, woodshop, media center,
dance studio, and kitchen. In addition, we augmented our physical education program
by installing a comprehensive athletic/exercise station outside the gymnasium that
The new facilities support Marine View’s comprehensive Visual and Performing Arts
program as well as an exciting array of electives, including Industrial Technology, 3-D
Printing, Robotics, Woodshop, Art, Dance, Band, Concert Choir, Jazz Ensemble,
Drama, Music, Guitar, Spanish, Leadership, and more.
Classrooms at Marine View have been thoughtfully designed to provide opportunities for
innovation, hands-on learning, and collaboration with peers. The classrooms are
equipped with two large ViewSonic flat screens which are connected to each other to
allow casting, and other instructional functions. All classrooms have been furnished with
new furniture that has a flexible design, allowing for multiple configurations and
maximum student engagement.
Interior upgrades to the site encompass air conditioning/heating, electrical, lighting,
technology, security, flooring, paint, landscaping, and a new digital marquee. Ocean
View School District is environmentally conscious and committed to conserving energy.
We have installed energy efficient LED lighting fixtures throughout the campus in
conjunction with SolaTubes which transfer outside sunlight into the buildings, and do not
use any electricity.
The campus also received a significant upgrade to the HVAC systems. New VRF
(Variable Refrigerant Flow) HVAC units were utilized to ensure a whisper quiet classroom environment to maximize the aural transmission between teacher and students. We also utilize Bio-PCM (Phase Changing Material) in all classrooms with new T-bar ceilings to provide energy savings, as it is a passive system that absorbs and releases heat which minimizes the runtime of the HVAC units, resulting in energy savings.
We are so proud of this beautiful school and the dynamic learning opportunities it
provides our students. If you would like a tour of this extraordinary campus, please call
